Curated Highlights: Luke Edward Hall
British interior designer Luke Edward Hall selects his personal highlights from Masterpiece Online.
De Jonckheere: Ambrosius Bosschaert the Younger, Bouquet of Flowers in a Vase placed on a Table covered with Fruits and Shells, 1634
Since 2019 I’ve been living in the English countryside. I have loved getting to grips with a garden for the first time in my life, and tulips, in particular, have been a joy to grow. We usually plant over 1,000 bulbs and over twenty varieties. I’d love a big old Dutch flower painting at home so I could enjoy tulips year-round. The colours in this piece are sublime.
Osborne Samuel: John Craxton, (Boy with Goat), 1970
I am an enormous Craxton fan. I love his depictions of the beautiful and ancient Greek countryside and its cast of characters: shepherds, hunters, sailors... Craxton’s works always seem to me to have such a sense of joy about them: full of movement and life.
Long-Sharp Gallery: Andy Warhol, Soldier, c. 1956
I love the playfulness and boldness of Warhol’s early drawings, and this one in particular is full of charm. A jaunty headpiece if ever I saw one.
ARTHISTORICAL: A Small Bronze Bust of a Man All'Antica, 16th century
A handsome man indeed, with beautiful, voluminous curls. I like his staring eyes very much.
Robert Young Antiques: A. De Clerck, 'Pierhead Painting', c.1890
I’m a big fan of naïve, primitive paintings, particularly of ships. I love the colours in this painting – the pale blue of the sky, the deep blue of the sea and the red lighthouse and flag. I find it very peaceful.
